When NBCs Olympic coverage began on Thursday night, viewers across the country were likely asking themselves the same thing: Whats up with Bob Costass glasses?
When the camera zoomed in, you could see that the glasses might not be a fashion statement. Something seemed wrong with Costass left eye. Thankfully, the host didnt leave viewers speculating for long. After previewing the nights coverage on NBC, he gave a self-deprecating explanation in a way only Bob Costas could:
Bear with me for a moment as I spare my friends in the press office countless inquiries. I have no choice to go all Peabody and Sherman on you for the next couple of nights since I woke up this morning with my left eye swollen shut and just about as red as the old Soviet flag. According to the NBC doctors here, its some kind of minor infection which should resolve itself by the weekend. If only all my issues would resolve themselves that quickly, but thats another story.
Thats why hes the best in the business, folks: cartoon references, an allusion to the old USSR and a whole bunch of self-mocking humor. I fully expect NBCs production team to have some fun in the next few days by putting Costas side-by-side with a picture of the aforementioned Peabody and Sherman.
